After the Fire

Earlier this year a huge and very damaging fire swept across the mountain reserve where we live.  The destruction was almost unbearable.  And yet in the awfulness was a strange kind of beauty.  I tried to capture it in this necklace and feel very proud of the result.

Using frayed silk, I was able to create something very much like the protea seeds as well as the blackened tree skeletons seen on the horizon.  The beads I used also tied in with “story”; wooden beads made by the bushmen of Namibia decorated with burn marks, porcupine quills gathered on my walks in the mountains and the glow of brass beads  all contributed to the feel.

I also used metallic threads to look like some of the plant material one sees on the mountain and the way these strands glint when they catch the light is quite spectacular.

The necklace is the traditional saucer shape favoured by some tribes in Africa.  It is a really beautiful piece that works conceptually but also functionally.  A true example of wearable art.
