My inspiration for these saucer or dish-shaped necklaces comes from the enkawera, wedding necklaces from Kenya. The sculptural quality of these necklaces is very striking.
This one is made from four single strand necklace fitting neatly together to form a flat “dish” shape. I’ve used african waxprint fabric for the two outer rings and South African Shweshwe for the two inner rings.
A beautiful, handmade Ethiopian Coptic Cross dominates visually and the circumference is studded with (green) dyed camel bone beads, and some smaller beads including Ethiopian prayer beads.
Despite its size, this necklace is very light which makes it easy to wear despite it’s size.
I generally wear the dish necklaces with a circular neckline and even over a polo neck but it can also be worn with a strapless top.
Use your innate sense of style and everything is possible.
